You can quote any hotel anywhere in Odisha, from Berhampur to Balasore, or Bhubaneswar to Rourkela. The same scene is everywhere, you enter into any small or medium sized hotel and chances are there that you will find at least a couple of young kids doing the chores of work including cleaning of the tables, dishes etc. and or supplying water to all.

Needless to say, the child rights act is being flaunted openly and the government is doing absolutely nothing about it. Although there is strict rule that children should not be employed in any type of work industry where health hazard is there, these hotels care least to the rules.

In Berhampur recently on a tip off the police raided one hotel in the center of the city and rescued as many as five children from the same hotel. Strange but true the hotel is situated near a police post and chances are tehre that many times the police personel might have visited the same hotel, why they did never react to the presence of the kids in the hotel? The hotel was situated near the most crowded old busstand area of the city, then it is sure that thousands of people visited the hotel and no body ever complained about the presence of kids?

The news of the same is online in detail on
http://www.odishanews.tk

No body bothered to inform anyone because it is common in this part of the state to see children employed in hotel industry.

On enquiry, one kid informed that he worked in the hotel because he earned 30 rupees by the day end and on many days some or other dishes for his family. And he worked from morning 5 till night 12 in the same hotel. Can u imagine when the state government is giving rules to pay not less than 100 rupees as wage to anybody, these kids can work for more than 15 hours for a meager 30 rupees.

The kids are easily available and they obey to what we say and also come cheap and so we employ them said one hotelier from Berhampur. He though mentioned that he gives two days holiday in a month to a kid with daily wage.

Many kids complained that they do not want to go to school because they want to earn money for their families. When the burden of family is on the tiny shoulder of these kids how can then go to school and spend time playing away???

Government can frame rules but can it feed my family of six. claimed a mother of two who sends both her kids to work in a hotel in city. Most people we interviewed were unaware of the fact that there is something for kids that the government is giving for free education, employment to families etc. She laughed and said "Those are all for villagers only".

What can be done? Can anyone suggest any viable solution????

100% agree with you. This type of child labour is the main reason behind the massive population rise in developing countries like India. Many parents in unreachable areas of orissa still think that the more children they will produce, the more will be amily income. And this income is basically by sending the children to work in hotels and the like, and even begging. we should openely discourage the parents in this practice.

The problem with government policies is that there has been so many governments in India and all that the governments have done is to woo the voters by bribing them by giving reservations, free meals, pensions etc etc. And now when the government is trying to educate the masses the people are unwilling to acept anything but only money in any form.

There is a saying which my father used to tell us when we were kids, "Never feed a baby by your hand, he will never learn to use his hands". Similar is the situation now in society. Our Netas and politicians have shown the peopl the way to corrupt and now if we wish to educate them, that is not posible.

Anyway after sending the topic and waiting for 24 hours at least I found someone reacting to this, and I strongly feel this may be the callous nature of we humans due to which the trade of children being sent into paid slavery is increasing. Thanks buddy for sharing my concerns.

Hope many more people join us soon.
