Are we becoming a Deaf and Dumb Society?

A few days back during the celebrations of the Maha Bishuba Sankranti, one family traveling by a bike fell down on the road and the man of the family was run over by a truck. The women kept crying out loud with pleads to help him, but no one gathered enough courage to take the man to the hospital. Although a heavy traffic road, not many people dared to come into her help.

Similar incident happened in not one but many places in Odisha as well as everywhere in the globe.

In a astonishing event when one man dared enough to go forward and help one such person in need, his wife pulled him back and said, "Do you want to run to the Police station time and again for this unknown man?" The man thought for a while and said, "Had it been me and someone is not coming forward what you would say or do?" The man was rushed to the hospital but could not survive the accident.

I don't just think but do believe strongly that people are becoming deaf, dumb and blind.

Times change. When I was in a village I remember my childhood when for a small event in the village the whole village would come up and be a part of it. May it be the home coming of any daughter of a villager the whole village would like to rejoice. That was a period of my life which I will remember for this life and all the lifes to come. I am a villager, and I would like to be one till I die, that may not be something which everyone would definitely rejoice about but I feel comfortable with my people who care for me and for everyone they know. The village fairs, festivals, marriages and funerals all were unique because they were attended by many people. And no one bothered to help the other for silly works. Everyone was family. And still now the same thing is running in villages. Everyone is like a family.

Alas! the same feeling is amiss in the crowd of the town. No one is bothered about the other. May it be a marriage or a funeral the neighbourhood never joins in happily, because they were not invited enough. The affection that was in the air is now missin, it may be partially due to the pollution, I feel that has started gripping not only non-living things but we living people too. We are all becoming insensitive to humans it may be because of a thing called fear. We have started becoming a fearful society. We fear a lot about anything and everything. What people will say matters more to us than what I personally feel good. If I stay back and help someone I may become an evidence who will be summoned to the court to give evidences, if I help someone, I may become a victim of the anger of someone else. Some may stop me midway and abuse me. We are not able to concentrate on our life, rather we are being influenced by others life.

We are following things which were once of less importance to us. What we learnt as a child was how to lead a happy life in future but I was not knowing as a child that, being happy meant being rich, having a big house, a big car and a hefty pay package. I think life was simple and I was more intelligent as a child, and now I feel the life has made me deaf to others pains, dumb to act for others causes and blind to the realities of life.
