Today(23 January 2014) is Netaji Jayanti. It is the birth day of Netaji Subhash chandra Bose, who was a great freedom fighter of Odisha. His date of birth was 23rd January 1897. His father was Mr.Janakinath Bose and mother was Prabhavati Devi. He had studied in Ravenshaw Collegiate School, cuttack and Presidency College, University of Calcutta.

23 Jan is also the birthday of another freedom fighter of Odisha, named as Veer Surendra Sai. He took birth on 23 January 1809 in a Village khinda. It is near to Lapanga on the way to jharsuguda about 40 km to the north of Sambalpur. His father was Dharma Singh.The resistance to British started in Sambalpur under the leadership of Surendar Sai. He was supported by his brothers, sons, relatives and some landlords(Zamindars). Before his surrender he spent seventeen years in prison. After his final arrest he spent twenty years including his detention of nineteen years in the remote Asirgarh hill fort where he died.
