Today(2nd August 2016) is Chitalagi Amabasya or Chitau Amabasya. This festival is celebrated on the no moon day of the lunar month of Shravana and is associated with the Jagannath temple. On this occasion a special ritual is held at Puri Jagannath temple. The forehead of the idol of Jagannath is adorned with a golden mark known as Chitta. A special type of rice cake called 'chitau' is offered to Lord Jagannath at the temple. This cake is prepared in every household of Odisha.

In villages on this occasion Gendeisuni, the goddess of snails and oysters is duly worshiped. These creatures are offered cakes and requested not to bruise the feet of farmers when they go to remove weeds from the fields. Now this culture is hardly seen in Odisha.
I like the Chitou pitha but don't know its preparation method.
