It is popularly believed that the Goddess Lakshmi goes around on this night visiting people, and showers her blessings upon those she finds awake and engaged in devotion.
In Odisha, girls wake up early in the morning and wear new garments after the bath. They offer puja to the Sun. Fasting for the whole day, in the evening they make Puja offerings to the Moon. A special variety bhog called "Chanda chakata" is used in this occasion. It is a festival of rejoicing for the girls. Mainly they sing songs like 'Kuanra punei jahna go'and dance, play Puchi khela. On this day the son-in-law is also invited to house.
