Maa Tarini is the female embodiment of power and the presiding deity for all Shakti and Tantra peethas or shrines in Orissa. Maa Tarini temple is in Ghatagaon, Keonjhar, in the state of Orissa(Odisha). Here are some important information for the devotees who want to visit the Maa Tarini temple.

Arriving at Ghatagaon

Ghatagaon is about 45 KM from Keonjhar town. If you are travelling from outside Orissa by flight, Bhubaneswar is the nearest airport you should land at. From Bhubaneswar, you can avail train or bus service to reach Jajpur Road Station or Keonjhar, the nearest town.

Buses ply from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and most other major towns of Orissa to Ghatgaon. Often people hire taxis to travel to Ghatagaon from any part of Orissa. For some tour packages, you can also contact Orissa Tourism Corporation, Bhubaneswar or tourist office in Keonjhar.

Amenities

Quite a few average standard restaurants can be found near the temple. However, it’s advisable to carry some drinking water and snacks while travelling.

Temple Timings

April – September: 6 AM – 1 PM and 3.30 PM – 8 PM
October – March: 7 AM – 1.30 PM and 3 PM – 7.30 PM

Daily Rituals at Maa Tarini Temple

  • Abaskasha (The Morning Worship): Maa Tarini’s daily rituals begins at 6 AM. Before the bath ritual of the Goddess, the idol was pasted with turmeric, Chua (kind of rough oil) and sandal paste. Then water is poured on MAA to complete the ritual of Bath. Then the Puja begins in midst of Ghantas (Bells), Aarati and is completed by the daily bhoga coconut, Bananas and other sweets.
  • Khichudi Dhupa (Puja at Noon): The second ritual, Khechedi Dhupa, is observed towards pre-noon everyday. Maa is offered Khichudi, a variety of cooked rice with lintels and vegetables.
  • Arnna Dhupa (At Mid Day): Observed generally post-noon (1-1.30 PM) everyday. Maa is offered Arnna (Rice), Dali or Dalma.
  • Sandhya Dhupa (Evening Offering): The last ritual of Maa before the temple is closed for the day. Chakuli Pitha (a varierty of cake made from rice batter) is offered.

You may also like to visit Maa Tarini temple during any of the major festivals observed at the Shrine.

Makara Sankranti (January 14-16 every year)
Maha Visubha Sankranti (April 14-16 every year)
Raja Sankranti (June 14-16 every year)

Wishes come true

Devotees from all over Orissa and also from outside Orissa send thousands and thousands of coconuts to Maa Tarini temple everyday. It’s believed that offering a coconut to the Goddess brings wishes true. Collection boxes for coconuts can be seen at all big and small transport hubs in Orissa. As a matter of fact, you can hand over a coconut to ANY public transport vehicle in Orissa and rest assured the coconut will reach Maa Tarini’s temple.

  1. Now a days daily train going on from Bhubaneswar to Keonjhar and also return train. So you can get train (Puri Keonjhar Express-18416) from Bhubaneswar and drop at Harichandanpur around at 11 AM . From Harichandanpur to Gatagaon is about 3 kilometer and regular taxi and auto available there. Again you will get return train (BBSR PURI Exp -18415) at 3 PM and reach bhubaneswar at 6.30PM.

    Now a days road condition not good from Cuttack to Keonjhar, I found this is good.

      1. Is the train always on time? Especially the return time? Does it really reaches at around 6:30pm or delays for 1hour os so?

    1. you will get auto from harichandanpur railway station to ghatagaon. All Cuttack to keonjhar or vice-versa bus going though Ghatagaon only. So you can choose which is best for you.

  2. Being inspired, I am planning to visit ghatagaon in the month of Feb.2016 to have blessings of Maa Tarini, if would have been alive till then.

  3. Ghatgaon MaaTarini Pitha is now well connected by Bus and Train.
    1)Puri-Barbil/Barbil-Puri express,stop at Harichandanpur 11km from Ghatgaon,then by taxi,auto or minibus mode.
    2)Through NH from Bhubaneswar/Cuttack via Dubri to Kendujhar, stop at Harichandanpur,then by above mode.
    3)Through NH215(now 4 lane) Panikoili to Rajamunda(Rourkela) or vice-versa,stop Directly in front of MAA at Ghatgaon.

  5. How can I reached at Maa Tarini temple from HOWRAH by train which station and is there any hotel .
    Please inform me in detail.

  6. On Google map harichandapur to tarini shows 16km whereas from nilakantheswar its 13km.How to reach from nilakantheswar railway station

    1. There are other tourist places also present near Ghatagaon, Tarini. The Sanaghagara, Badaghagara and Gundichaghagi waterfalls are present some kms away from the temple. All the places are good picnic spots.

    Please can you tell me how can i book Accommodation near ghatgaon Tarini Temple(MAA TARINI ATITHI NIVAS or MAA TARINI YATRI NIVAS).
    Is there any online option or only Offline??
